TEACHING KINAESTHETICALLY
Sat 21st June 12:15-5:00pm
Presented by Nicki O'Clarey and Ramona Peoples
Our kinaesthetic sense provides a means to feel bodily sensations, spatial orientation and learn new movement patterns. It can be easy to overlook this sense and rely on visual and audio cueing to teach movement which can lead to an externally directed way of moving, a 'third person viewpoint rather than a self discovery.
Once movement can be felt from within, undesirable patterns and postural habits can be brought in to awareness and changed.
This workshop takes a somatic approach to teaching Pilates-based exercises, exploring how to use tactile feedback, how to create sensations that can be felt and how to cue movement from the ‘first’ person’ perspective.
We will explore the concepts of 'neutral' and 'core stability' and share some research in this field looking at definitions, how the concepts apply and whether they serve us well.
